The federal ministry of health (BMG) published a fect sheet on April 28th, 2020, which aims at a step by step development back to a regular hospital mode. However, the hospitals must be prepared for a worsening of the pandemic course and keep capable of acting in short time.
The most important facts of the sheet are:
- 25% of the existing ICU beds remain reserved for COVID-19 patients.
- 70% of the OR capacity is allowed to be used for non-emergency cases. This percentage will be, depending on the individual situation in the hospital, increased of 10% in a two weeks rthythm.
- The use of capacities for not COVID-19 patients need prioritization:
- Planning of non-emergency surgeries on a weekly basis
- Prioritizing of cases with progressive diseases (the decision must be made patient individually by the physicians).
- The federal states are allowed to spread the 25% reserved ICU beds on the different hospitals which leads to the development of Corona specialized hospitals and hospitals treating non COVID-19 patients.
BMG’s fact sheet (available for download here) emphasizes that the current Corona situation in the hospital must not lead to a worsening in healthcare in general. Healthcare, especially for emergency cases, is and remains guaranteed.
