Germany’s government coalition ends – and the healthcare reform?

The collapse of the German governing coalition makes the for 2025 planned overhaul of the German healthcare reimbursement unlikely.

The recent failure of the German government puts the passage of the urgently needed healthcare reform bill in jeopardy. The bill, already facing a hot controversy between the federal states and the federal health minister is now further threatened by the collapse of the governing coalition. By the discontinuity principal a new government must start an unfinished legislative process all over again.
In this situation it is highly unlikely that the healthcare reform bill will be able to pass through Bundestag and Bundesrat in time to take effect by January 2025.

At Healthcare Heads we believe – while a further delay of such a much-needed reform is indeed unfortunate – the failure of the bill in its current form offers a chance to eventually pass and implement a much better version.

For the healthcare industry, however, the situation of uncertainty in the German healthcare market continues. While everything is likely to stay the same – at least for now - on the federal level legislation, individual states like North-Rhine-Westphalia already forge ahead to address the various urgent problems. This presents an opportunity for innovative medical products to offer just such solutions.
