On September 9, 2024, politicians and representatives of German hospitals met at the (hybrid) hospital summit in Berlin.

While the federal and state governments have been struggling for two years to achieve the urgently needed reform of the German hospital system, the hospitals themselves are running out of steam. The entire sector is now in deficit, reports Dr. G. Gaß, Chairman of the DKG. Cold structural change increasingly jeopardizes comprehensive care for the population in rural areas, while at the same time there is an oversupply of clinics in metropolitan areas.
The German Hospital Federation is calling for a simplified introduction of service groups based on the North Rhine-Westphalia model, a case number-independent reserve financing as well as a significant reduction in bureaucracy.
This means:
- The introduction of service groups will drive the specialization of hospitals.
- Several hospitals will have to shut down.
- The remaining hospitals will face a required 20% reduction in case numbers.
All of this will have a massive impact on the German healthcare market as we know it.
